Still Life, Busy Hands – Year 4

This term, Year 4 have been diving into the world of still life painting — and what a creative journey it’s been!

We began by learning the foundations of colour mixing, focusing especially on how to use black and white to change a colour’s tone. The children explored how adding white creates a tint, while adding black creates a shade. This simple yet powerful technique helped bring their artwork to life and added real depth to their paintings.

Our first project was to create a 3D painting of a single object using these new skills. We all chose to paint an apple and practised carefully observing and painting it, using tints and shades to give it shape and dimension.

Then came the exciting part! Each child brought their chosen object into school. We arranged them into group compositions, combining different shapes and textures to create interesting still life scenes. The children then painted these new compositions, applying their knowledge of shade and tint to make each item stand out while still working together as a whole piece.

The results were fantastic. Come and check them out, they will be proudly displayed in our corridors soon!

Well done, Year 4 — true artists in the making!
