What are we learning in Y4 Summer Term?

At St Michael’s we continue to strive to be the best that we can be. We are looking forward to continuing our learning with enthusiasm this term.

Here is an outline of what Year 4 will be learning during the Summer Term.

ENGLISH

This term we will be exploring story and looking at the text structure, characters and the use of descriptive language and dialogue in a ‘warning tale’. We will be learning to retell parts of the story ‘The Canal’ and learning to create our own warning tales. In addition our focus on Explanation text will aim to explain why some animals are extinct or endangered.

We will also be developing our comprehension skills by reading ‘The Girl of Ink and Stars’ by Kiran Millwood Hargrave. This imagined island fantasy sets the daughter of a cartographer off on an enchanting quest to find her runaway best friend, with only her knowledge of ancient myths and her father’s map to guide her.

MATHS

In addition to embedding the children’s mental maths skills, through our daily CLIC programme and BMBT (Big Maths Beat That), we are following the White Rose Maths curriculum, which covers the whole content of the National Curriculum. This term the focus will be:

  • Decimals
  • Measurement – involving time and money
  • Statistics – data handling
  • Geometry – properties of shapes and position and direction

Also this term, this is the FINAL PUSH for learning ALL our TIMES TABLES off by heart. We will be focussing on our x12 times tables as well as revising x6, x7 and x9 times table facts so that they are perfect. Children should also revise their x3, x4 and x8 tables, from the previous year. We will continue to have fun with speed tests and games and challenging ourselves to learn the division facts too!

The Year 4 Multiplication Times Table Check (MTC) is in June! Y4 will be ready!

SCIENCE: ‘Animals including humans’ and ‘living things and their habitats

We will be learning about our digestive system and the types of function of teeth in animals. We will also be exploring food chains and different animal habitats as well as gaining an understanding of the classification and grouping of living things.

TOPIC (HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY)

In Geoography we are learning about North America as part of our whole school theme of Wisdom and Wonder.

We will be developing our understanding of climate, weather and location of places in this region of the world, as well as comparing places and discovering their wonders.

We are looking forward to seeing your wonderful projects from home!
