Year 3 Learning in Spring Term

Spring is in the air and the children in Year 3 will be enjoying a range of learning activities.

English

In English, we will continue to develop the children’s reading comprehension skills by using a whole class reading approach. The two books that we will cover this term are: ‘The Wild Way Home’ (by Sophie Kirtley and ‘Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes.

In writing, the children will be producing a fictional ‘portal tale’ based on ‘Stone Age Boy‘, instruction writing based on our topic, along with newspaper report writing based on ‘Iron Man‘. We will also be reading ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ by Daniel Handler as our reading for pleasure text.

Maths

In addition to embedding the children’s mental maths skills, through our daily CLIC programme and BMBT (Big Maths Beat That), we are following the White Rose Maths curriculum, which covers the entire content of the National Curriculum. This term the focus will be:

  • Multiplication and Division
  • Fractions and Decimals
  • Measure (Money)

This term, the children will be learning the x4 times table, so that they know it off by heart. They should also know their x2, x5, x3 and x10 off by heart.

TOPIC (HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY)

In History, Year 3 will be studying the Stone Age. We will be looking at how people lived, creating timelines of events and learning all about their way of life and how it compares to modern-day living. We will also have an opportunity to make our own fossils and will have many cross-curricular lessons on our topic, particularly involving Art and Drama.

SCIENCE – (Forces & magnets / Plants)

We will be learning all about forces and magnets, conducting a series of experiments to test our theories. We will be investigating push and pull forces, along with friction and magnetic/non-magnetic materials.

In the second half of this term, we will begin our topic of Plants, beginning to plant seeds and prepare for the spring. We hope to grow lots of our own flowers, fruits and vegetables – so watch this space!

RE

In RE, we will learn about the three types of miracle that Jesus performed and some examples of each. We will look at our own relationship with God and what constitutes a ‘miracle’. Children will have an opportunity to study miracle stories from the Bible and present them in a variety of ways.

PE

The children’s PE slot is on a Monday. This term the children will be focusing on fitness and gymnastics. Please ensure your child is wearing the navy blue St. Michael’s tracksuit and it is clearly labelled with their name. Alternatively, if your child does not have a school tracksuit, please ensure they bring their house colour t-shirt and jogging bottoms to change into for the lesson.

MFL (Modern Foreign Language)

The children will continue to learn Spanish, developing their skills in speaking and listening.

Music

In music, the children will be composing using their imaginations as well as sharing musical experiences. They will continue their djembe drumming lessons.

Computing

Computing this term will focus on connecting computers and stop-frame animation. We will continually have a focus on e-safety weaved into the lessons.

HRE (Health and Relationship Education)

In HRE, the children will be looking at two themes: Dreams and Goals and Healthy Me which looks at ways to stay healthy in mind and body.
