Out of abundance comes great stories

This term, we have launched our story writing competition, using our abundance words.

Every week, we remind the children about our vision for every child to live an abundant life and discuss what abundance may look like to them. We seek opportunities to grow, develop and have new experiences.

One of the many ways we promote this is with our abundance word, shared in collective worship on a Monday.  These abundance words are used to develop our storytelling vocabulary. So far since September, we have focused on 20 of these words in our speech and writing; now it’s competition time to put our abundance of storytelling language to use!

The story writing competition asks children to create a story, in 500 words, which uses every abundance word. Below is the list of words to be used and their meanings. Although the competition is 500 words, we will allow you use up to 50 words above or below this word count.

You can write or type the story – it’s completely up to you. Please remember to underline the abundance words.

The prizes are Argos vouchers.

Entries for the abundance word story competition should be returned to the class teacher by Monday 22nd May. Winners will be announced on Tuesday 6th June.

Year 1 and Year 2 are taking the children on a roarsome poetry adventure this term; a poetry writing adventure! They are entering the Young Writers Competition – this year the theme is Safari. We can travel from the jungle or the Artic to the local area or zoo… with Poetry Safari the possibilities are endless.

The children will work on planning and writing these poems in class and the competition hosts have prizes for all entries received – a sticker and a bookmark. The school will also receive a prize.

Added to this, the children whose poems are published in the book will also receive a certificate. This is a fantastic opportunity for the children to get involved in some fun creative writing with the possibility of their work being published.

Closing date for poetry entries: Friday 26th May

Now it’s over to you – grab hold of the abundance words, get your poetry thinking going, have a pen, pencil or keyboard and let’s see what you can create; we are excited to read your stories and poems.

Happy writing everyone!
