SCIENCE WEEK – CONNECTIONS

SCIENCE WEEK SAW ST MICHAEL’S BECOME CURIOUS, LOGICAL, IMAGINATIVE, CREATIVE, PATIENT, OBSERVANT, ORGANISED AND CONNECTED!

The theme for Science week was ‘Connections’ so we made connections by working alongside other year groups.

NURSERY AND RECEPTION

Nursery and Reception connected through play to complete a task. The children used their fine motor skills and team work to connect all the links of the chain together, then they had to work out how to link it altogether to make ONE BIG LINK. In the playground, they tried to work out how long it was and then joined the ends together – getting them to be all connected together. It was such great fun!

YEAR ONE AND YEAR SIX

Working in pairs, the children made connections by building designs with Lego. They worked together and talked about the best way to connect pieces for each design which included bridges, vehicles and buildings.

Some of the children created rainbow patterns by adding warm water to Skittles which had been carefully arranged on a plate. The warm water connected with the sugar colouring on the Skittles, causing it to dissolve. The colours blended and merged to create beautiful patterns.

YEAR TWO AND YEAR FIVE

Year 2 and Year 5 begun their connections by visiting each other’s classrooms. What an amazing connection for Year 5 to revisit what was once their classroom and for Year 2 to visit what will one day be their classroom. They carried on their connections by brainstorming various designs for an eco-friendly bridge made out of recycled materials. All the recycled materials were brought in from home by the children. They had so much fun building the eco-friendly bridge.

YEAR THREE AND YEAR FOUR

Year 3 and Year 4 connected with nature.

Ecosystems are communities of living and non-living things in an environment. They can include things like
animals and plants as well as water and soil. Year 3 and Year 4 carried out a fun activity which showed how everything in an ecosystem is interdependent, and how the loss of one connection can have a knock-on effect.

Here are some quotes from their activity

  • I enjoyed working with the Y4’s and learnt that brambles are connected to foxes.
  • I liked that Y3 and Y4 were working together and we were learning about the forest ecosystem, food chains and about what animals eat.
  • I learnt that different animals can connect in different ways and if an animal or plant dies, the whole food chain or part of it is affected.
  • I enjoyed collaborating with the Year 3’s.
  • We found out what might happen to a food chain if global warming strikes
  • I liked smiling and connecting with everyone. I liked how we learnt about nature connections.

GRAND FINALE!

To finalise our Science Week and solidify the idea of connections, the whole school created a human chain around Champion Crescent. What a connection! AMAZING!

Connected classes, connected teachers, connected children, who all work together to make one connected school!

Great Science Week St Michael’s
