Mirror, mirror on the wall

Have you ever had someone put a message behind your back that you have tried to read?

Have you ever tried to look around a corner before you get there?

Well Year 3 can help you with this because we have been investigating reflections with mirrors.

We wrote messages on post it notes and then used mirrors to try to read what had been written. We learnt that to effectively read the message, two mirrors had to be used. But that is not all – we had to get the angle just right!

We saw some of the writing was reflected too – it got quite challenging at times.

Next, we tried to view an object on the table. We discussed periscopes and how they are used on submarines and also can be used to see around corners. It’s all about reflection!

We also made kaleidoscopes as they make their beautiful patterns using reflections.

Although this was a lot of fun, we did this investigation because the National Curriculum says that pupils should be taught to notice that light is reflected from surfaces. We definitely noticed that in our learning.
