The Thriving Threes – Brilliant Baking Bonanza

Year 3 had a fantastic time becoming scientists and bakers during our Science Day! In Science, we have been learning about scientific enquiry, focusing on how to carry out a fair test by changing just one variable.

We began by discussing our experiment and making predictions about what might happen if we changed the amount of flour in a cake recipe.

Our first cake was our control cake, made using 100g of self-raising flour, 100g of unsalted butter, 100g of caster sugar, 2 large eggs, 15ml of whole milk and 5ml of vanilla extract.

Next, we made our second cake, but this time we doubled the self-raising flour to 200g, keeping all the other ingredients the same. This allowed us to investigate how changing one variable could affect the final result.

Once our cakes were baked, we observed some interesting differences! The cake with double the flour ended up being approximately twice the size of our control cake. However, it also appeared to be much drier and crumblier.

Science in Year 3

The children thoroughly enjoyed measuring, mixing, observing and working together while putting their scientific enquiry skills into practice. It was a wonderful opportunity to explore predictions, variables, fair testing and drawing conclusions in a fun, hands-on way!

Who knew science could be so delicious?
