The Terrific Twos go to St Paul's Cathedral

Today we’re going to tell you all about our AMAZING trip to St. Paul’s Cathedral. Our teacher thinks we were just doing normal learning… but really, we are secretly reporting everything for our blog!

First, we travelled into London to visit St. Paul’s Cathedral, which links to our topic about the Great Fire of London. When we arrived, we looked up and said “WOW!” because the cathedral was HUGE and had a giant dome. We learned that the cathedral we see today was rebuilt after the Great Fire of London destroyed the old one.

Inside, we took part in a workshop called “From Ashes to Architecture.” We learned how London changed after the fire and how buildings were redesigned to be safer. We discovered that houses were built differently after 1666, using more brick and stone instead of wood to stop fires spreading so quickly.

Next, we went to Pudding Lane, which is a very important place in history. We learned that the Great Fire of London started in 1666 in a bakery owned by Thomas Farriner. Imagine waking up and finding a fire starting in your bakery! That small fire spread and changed London forever!

We also visited The Monument, a very tall column built to remember the Great Fire of London. Here is an interesting fact we learned:

If you laid The Monument down on its side, it would reach exactly to the place on Pudding Lane where the fire began!

After that, we saw the River Thames, which helped stop the fire spreading further because it acted like a natural barrier. We enjoyed spotting boats and looking at famous London sights while thinking about how different London must have looked in 1666.

We learned so many fascinating facts, including:

  • The Great Fire of London started in 1666.
  • It began on Pudding Lane in a bakery.
  • The baker was called Thomas Farriner.
  • Much of London burned down, including the old St. Paul’s Cathedral.
  • London was rebuilt stronger and safer afterwards.

Our favourite parts were exploring the cathedral, learning how London rose from ashes to architecture, and walking where real history happened!

We had such a terrific day learning outside the classroom (even though our teacher definitely suspects nothing about this secret blog…).

Until our next adventure…
