The Terrific Twos Become Sculptors!

This half term in art, we have been learning how to be amazing sculptors and as you know there is nothing the Terrific Twos cannot do!

First, we practised making pinch pots. It looked easy, but we had to be really careful to pinch gently and keep turning the clay so it didn’t get too thin or crack. Some of us may or may not have had to start again (we’re not naming names).

Then we learned about something called slip. It’s like clay glue! We used it to stick pieces together properly. We had to score the clay first, add the slip, and press it carefully so it didn’t fall off later.

For our final piece we were going to make tiles and carve houses on to them. Our houses were inspired by the houses in the 17th Century, as we are learning about why they were a significant factor in the Great Fire of London.

Before making our final tiles, we designed our houses in our sketchbooks. We planned windows, doors, roof shapes and tiny details. Then came the best part- carving! We used tools to press, scrape and carve our house designs into clay tiles. We had to concentrate so we didn’t carve too deep or snap anything.

We thoroughly enjoyed becoming sculptors over this half term and we cannot wait for our next conquest, so stay tuned…
