Salvete et grati venistis ad diem Romanum

Hello and welcome to Roman Day!

Today, our Year 3 and 4 children stepped back in time for an unforgettable Roman Day, and what a day it was! We began by transforming ourselves into Romans.

The classroom was filled with emperors, empresses, slaves, and even a few fierce Celts. The effort everyone put into their costumes made the day feel truly special and brought history to life right from the start.

Our adventure was led by Titus, our very own “real-life Roman,” who guided us through the day. He introduced us to the fascinating history of Ancient Rome using a large map, helping us understand just how vast and powerful the Roman Empire once was. One of the most exciting parts of the morning was getting to see and even touch genuine Roman artefacts. Some of these objects were thousands of years old, imagine holding something that had once been used by a real Roman! From pottery to coins, it was an incredible hands-on experience.

Perhaps the most memorable (and slightly shocking!) moment was learning about Roman hygiene… including their shared “toilet brush”! Let’s just say it made us all very grateful to be living in modern times.

We also had great fun playing an ancient Roman game called Delta, followed by a quiz to test all the knowledge we had gained. Later, we headed outside to enjoy learning some Latin together, including a version of “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.” Here are some of the words we learned if you’d like to practise at home:

Head– Caput

Shoulders – Humeri

Knees – Genua

Toes – Digiti pedum

Eyes – Oculi

Ears – Aures

Mouth – Os

Nose – Nasus

And a few extra useful words:

Hello – Salve (to one person) / Salvete (to more than one person)

Teacher – Magister (male) / Magistra (female)

Student – Discipulus (male) / Discipula (female)

In the afternoon, the excitement reached a whole new level! We learned all about Roman armour and weapons and even took part in a thrilling re-enactment of Boudicca’s battle. It was amazing to step into the shoes of people from the past and experience history in such an active and engaging way.

All in all, it was a truly memorable day filled with learning, laughter, and lots of Roman fun. The children were fantastic throughout and embraced every activity with enthusiasm.
