Number Day Fun!
St Michael's like to make learning fun as well as raise awareness for key issues; taking part in NSPCC Number Day is one way to do this. The class join in fun maths activities and discuss key issues too. Of couse Buddy, the NSDPCC mascot joined the fun too!
Reception explored numbers, composition, number and quantity through fun, practical activities. The children counted objects, matched numerals to amounts, and practised writing numbers. We linked numbers to their own ages to make learning meaningful and learnt to sign numbers 0–10, building confidence and enjoyment in early maths.
Number Day in Reception
Year 1 had a fantastic day doing a variety of different activities. We practised counting in different ways and worked together to problem solve.
We had a carousel of activities such as sorting foam shapes using tweezers into colours and properties, using diennes to partition numbers into tens and ones, sequencing numbers to 100, using the numicon to make number bonds to 20 and we used playdough to make 100 little balls to count!
Number Day in Year 1
Year 1 had this to say about Number Day:
-I loved playing mathletics on the Ipads
-I liked holding Buddy
-I loved the math games
-I enjoyed making the little playdough balls to 100
-I loved wearing numbers on our clothes
Year 2 enjoyed taking part in a range of fun maths activities. We used Hit the Button and Mathletics on the IPads to practise our number facts and completed timed maths challenges to improve our speed and accuracy. We also tackled a series of challenges, including decoding messages with numbers, connect-the-dots counting, money problems and colour-by-multiplication. It was a great day full of problem-solving and mathematical fun.
Number Day in Year 2
Year 2 had this to say:
“I love number day!”
“I beat my score!”
“This is fun!”
“Buddy is my favourite!”
“I like wearing numbers.”
Number Day in Year 3
Year 4 took part in the live mathletics, translations with interesting shapes in patterns to make math based art and tricky maths puzzles. They had this to say...
I enjoyed wearing my own clothes with numbers on them, everyone was creative
The activities were spectacular, I like mathelics live the most
I liked mixing art and maths with our shape drawings
I liked playing against my friends in live mathletics
We made patterns with colourful shapes for our translation art
I enjoyed using my brain for the tricky maths puzzles, they were hard but fun

Number Day in Year 5
Year 6 began the day with a morning starter looking for the odd one out. This was followed by a number of fun activities including figuring out how many triangles were in the given shape until they went cross-eyed, hit the button competition (which relied a lot on the correct strategy and not necessarily knowledge) and thinking outside the box puzzles for example making the number 9 with only 3 match sticks! One of the highlights of the day was to compete against each other on Mathletics games and having Buddy join in with the fun.
Above all, we learnt what NSPCC meant and why we were fundraising for the organization. Can we have another Number Day soon, please?
