Minibeasts and Habitats

Reception had a wonderful opportunity to visit Dacres Wood this week where they spent the morning learning all about minibeasts and their habitats with Jess. The children discovered lots of fascinating facts, including, ‘all insects are minibeasts, but not all minibeasts are insects!’

They learnt that insects have 6 legs and 3 body parts, while other minibeasts, such as spiders, have 8 legs. They also explored what makes a creature a minibeast and where different creatures like to live and hide.

During the visit, the children listened carefully to a story, enthusiastically joined in with a fun minibeast song ‘Head, Thorax Abdomen’, and worked together brilliantly during a minibeast hunt in the woods. The experience created an opportunity of abundance for the children as they explored nature first-hand and deepened their understanding of the world around them through exciting, practical learning.

We were incredibly impressed with the children’s behaviour throughout the trip, with Jess commenting and praising their excellent behaviour, listening, teamwork and enthusiasm! The children thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the visit and returned to school full of excitement with new knowledge to share!
