This week in Reception, we have been exploring mass and capacity through lots of practical, hands-on learning. The children have been using (and creating their own!) balance scales to compare heavier or lighter objects and investigating how to make the scales balance. They have also been exploring capacity through fine motor, water and sand play, filling, pouring and comparing different containers to see which holds more or less.
We have explored these mathematical concepts in exciting and meaningful ways, encouraging the children to predict, test their ideas and use mathematical language in their play as the children compare quantities, explore measures and develop their understanding through active exploration. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity, problem-solving skills and enthusiasm shining through as they investigate and discover.
