MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU.

Year Five are learning about forces in science.  A force is a push or a pull and can make things move, stop, change their speed, direction or change their shape. The National Curriculum says that children should be taught to ‘identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces,’ and ‘recognise that some mechanisms including levers, pulleys and gears allow a smaller force to have a greater effect.’

Force is measured using a force meter, so in class we were learning how to use one.  The units for force are Newtons (N).

Did you know that the unit of measure for force was named after Sir Isaac Newton. He is one of the greatest English Mathematicians of his generation, born in 1643.

We had so much fun and are looking forward to learning more about air resistance, water resistance, friction, buoyancy and gravity.

Here are Year five in action.

Did you know that gravity pulls objects down with a force of approximately 1N for every 100g? Therefore, 200g will have a gravitational force of approximately 2N. Try it out – carry out a simple investigation. Does it follow the pattern?

Sir Isaac Newton died in 1727 but his legacy lives on. Albert Einstein referred to Sir Isaac Newton as a ‘Shining Star’ in 1927, 200 years after Newton’s death! Einstein claimed that Newton had one of the most brilliant minds of anybody who had ever lived!

What will future generations say about your mind?
